期刊文獻（又稱為定期刊物、連續出版刊物等，一般簡稱為期刊） 是一種出版品，供人閱讀、參考、引用等。期刊通常每隔一段時間出版，稱之為一期。
期刊是一個統稱，是一個按照出版時距而分出的出版形式，並不是專稱某一種刊物類別。期刊的內延十分廣闊，下轄多個刊物子類，包括報章、雜誌、通訊、文藝刊物、學報、年報、年鑑等。
分類
按其出版的間距，則大概可分為下列數種：
- 每日出版者，即日刊，通常為報章所採用，所以不少報章也起名某某日報。
- 每周出版者，即周刊，通常為雜誌所採用，所以不少報章也起名某某周刊。如屬報章類，則稱某某周報。
- 每十日出版者，即旬刊，如：稅務旬刊(Tax Journal)。
- 隔周出版者，即雙周刊，通常為雜誌所採用。
- 每月出版者，即月刊。通常為文藝刊物、專題雜誌、評論雜誌等所採用。
- 隔月出版者，即雙月刊。通常為文藝刊物、專題雜誌、評論雜誌、學術報刊等所採用。
- 每三月出版者，即季刊。取其一年出版四次，如季節一般。通常為文藝刊物、專題雜誌、評論雜誌、學術報刊等所採用。
編次方式
至於期刊中期（或稱號）的編次，通常是由出版單位（不一定是出版社）據該刊物的出版次數，依照自然數序列而編排。例如首次出版，編為第一期（華人社會又多稱為創刊號），隔一段時日所出版，則稱為第二期，再隔一段時日所出版，則稱為第三期， 如此類推。 大致而言，在該刊物改版或停刊前，這個序號一般不會中斷或重新排次。一些出版歷史悠久的期刊，可達到上千期，成為人類出版史上的一項紀錄。
在這種一般的排次方式之外，另有兩種方式亦常被採用：
第一種是先以年代編次，再加上自然數序列。如2000年第1期， 2010年第3期。採在這種方法的出版單位，又每再加上總期數（卽以上舉的方法編次），以示清晰。
第二種是先以卷號編次。再加上自然數序列。如第1卷第1期，第3卷第4期。
