中國遼寧本溪市中鋼分廠，2016年中國鋼鐵產量達13億噸[1]，超過美國日本印度俄國總和佔世界一半。


重工業為工業的一種下屬分類相對於輕工業，通常指鋼鐵業、石化業這種需要大型生產設備和大量人力的工業，重工業特性是能提供大量工作機會，但是技術難度只屬中等，唯一需要的是大量初期資金投入建設大型機具和廠房，所以大多國家的重工業都有政府扶植。重工業還能成為諸多高科技行業和知識經濟的發展基礎，也能轉型軍事工業，因此成為一國國力的指標。缺點是通常會產生較多污染。
