蟲族或異形、異蟲（Zerg）是星海爭霸中的一個種族，母星為澤瑞斯星（Zerus），最大的活動區則是在查爾（Char）。為墮落的薩爾那加（Xel'Naga）亞蒙所創造的第二個強大的種族，在故事裡被視為「純粹的本質」（pure of essence）。
背景
在薩爾那加亞蒙認為神族是個失敗的創造物之後，它們放棄了神族而前往虛空，在銀河系的核心之中發現了澤瑞斯，繼續進行演化實驗，從形式上的純粹改為追求本質上的純粹，薩爾那加致力發展一種稱作蟲族的小型類昆蟲物種的演化，這些小蟲般的生物看起來不可能適應澤瑞斯的環境，但蟲族發展出了寄生當地原生物種的能力，甚至能控制宿主的代謝與生理結構，使用了新的身體來適應環境。在蟲族抵達克普魯星區時，所有蟲族皆服從它們的集體感知—主宰（Overmind）。主宰的首要目標是同化神族，但卻發現人類所有的幽能潛力。在俘虜了有強大幽能的人類莎拉‧凱莉根之後，主宰將其改造成新的生物－「刀鋒女皇」。
在主宰被神族毀滅之後，刀鋒女皇展開了對蟲族的全面統治。
在《自由之翼》結局，雷諾突擊隊與自治聯盟的聯軍使用遠古神器（星鑰石）攻入刀鋒女皇凱莉根的大本營並將其回復成人類凱莉根後帶走。
在《蟲群之心》時，凱莉根為了救出被蒙斯克為首的泰倫自治聯盟綁走的雷諾，藉由澤拉圖的指引來到了蟲族的發源行星澤瑞斯再度變回了刀鋒女皇。在攻入泰倫自治聯盟首都並擊斃其首領蒙斯克後，刀鋒女王率領著蟲族們進入銀河中心尋找著墮落的薩爾那加-亞蒙。
在《虛空之遺》的結局，凱莉根飛升成薩爾納加，三族聯合擊敗了亞蒙，之後蟲群則交給札迦拉管理。
特色
數目龐大：蟲族容易形成龐大數目，雖然能力值並不是很出色。
蟲苔：蟲族的基地會散佈蟲苔，能夠治療與加速異形單位。
遁地：在升级相关科技后，所有蟲族的地面單位都能遁地，遁地的單位不會被看見。
地下蠕蟲：蟲族的地道網路，單位能從此網路通過。
