清潔能源、潔淨能源或綠色能源是指不排放污染物的能源。
在美國，許多州採取了鼓勵從風能，太陽能和核能等能源生產清潔能源的計劃。特別是核能仍然是許多尋求清潔能源政策的國家的一個有吸引力的選擇，因為它能夠在不產生任何溫室氣體排放的情況下發電。[1]
類同的定義是可再生能源，指原材料可以再生的能源，如水力发电、风力发电、太阳能、生物能（沼气）、地熱能、海潮能、海水溫差發電等，目前兩者幾乎是同意詞，可再生能源不存在能源耗竭的可能，因此日益受到许多国家的重视，尤其是能源短缺的国家。
值得注意的是水力发电、太阳能並不是綠色能源，因為興建水庫以及製造太陽能板過程會汙染甚至破壞環境。應審慎評估後再使用。
核能發電消耗铀燃料，蘊藏量大，能用上百年，且技術成熟，但盡管技術再成熟，几乎所有的国家，包括技术和管理最先进的国家，都不能保证發电站絕對安全(當然，任何能源站都並非絕對安全，甚至水庫都有崩塌之危險。)
至今影響較大的事故只有前苏联在1986年的切尔诺贝利核事故，以及日本2011年3月11日的由海嘯、人為疏失所帶來的福岛第一核电站事故。[來源請求]
未來發展

可再生能源是理論上最理想的能源，因為可以使用年限應可以超過人類歷史，可以不受能源短缺的影响。
但也受自然条件的影响，如需要有水力、风力、太阳能资源必須有夠大的水動能、大風、劇烈陽光。而且最主要的是投资和维护费用非常高，發電效率低，所以发出的电成本高。
现在许多科学家在积极寻找提高利用可再生能源效率的新科技和新方法，相信随着地球资源的短缺，可再生能源将发挥越来越大的作用。
